Choosing Your Way to a Healthier You

Are You Choosing Fat?

"I want more health problems, less energy, and increased risk of death at an early age". If you are anything like me, this is the conversation you had with yourself as you prepared for 2008. "I don't want my clothes to fit. I don't want the vitality required to live an active lifestyle. I don't want any new experiences this year. I think I will try to gain a few pounds and spend more time in front of my television. Those new reality shows really do something for me." Ok, so maybe those aren't the exact words we used as we set pen to paper on the New Year's Resolution list. However, as in other areas of life, what we do for fitness' sake matters a whole lot more than what we say.

Would you rather be lethargic or energetic? Obese or healthy? Do the choices you make every day reflect your answers to these questions? I often go through huge portions of the day on auto-pilot, without considering the "minor" decisions I make or their consequences. I've discovered that this is a great way to end up heavier, slower, and less fit than I want to be. The result of ignoring my choices and their consequences is life at less than its best. Who would knowingly choose that? One of my goals for this summer is to improve my personal best time for the 5k (a run of 3.1 miles). In order to accomplish this goal, I need to spend more time jogging and thinking about the things I put in my body. Talking about it, thinking about it, even writing about it will not bring it to fruition. Every trip to the refrigerator is a choice. Every "I'll do it tomorrow" is a choice. I have made far too many of these choices. Are you in the same boat? Are we choosing fat over fit? I am afraid that for many of us, that is exactly the case.

We can be victorious in this struggle against bad choices, but victory requires recognition. We must recognize the choices we are making and call them what they are. The trip to the fast food restaurant is a choice. The second helping of dessert is a choice. Sitting on the couch instead of going for a walk, jog, or run is a choice. They are all bad choices. Will you join me in choosing health? Choose to move, choose to eat right, choose to be the fit, energetic person you really want to be. If you're reading this, it is not too late. The weight can be lost. The energy level can increase. There is a healthier, happier you waiting for the right choices to be made. Don't let yourself down.
